No more road maintenance or garbage pickup. No more fire departments, no more police. In summer the ones near orchards were filled with trays of fruit that dehydrated in the heat. In the cold months, they were ideal for food storage. They stood dormant on runways and in hangars. No more airplanes, no more requests to put your tray table in its upright and locked position – but no, this wasn't true, there were still airplanes here and there. No more towns glimpsed from the sky through airplane windows, points of glimmering light no more looking down from thirty thousand feet and imagining the lives lit up by those lights at that moment. No more certainty of surviving a scratch on one's hand, a cut on a finger while chopping vegetables for dinner, a dog bite. No more concert stages lit by candy-colored halogens, no more electronica, punk, electric guitars. No more screens shining in the half-light as people raise their phones above the crowd to take pictures of concert states. Aviation gas lasts longer, but it was difficult to come by. No more films, except rarely, except with a generator drowning out half the dialogue, and only then for the first little while until the fuel for the generators ran out, because automobile gas goes stale after two or three years. No more trains running under the surface of cities on the dazzling power of the electric third rail. No more porch lights with moths fluttering on summer nights. No more ball games played out under floodlights. No more diving into pools of chlorinated water lit green from below.

He wrestles with the actual experience and this struggle continues well into the boy's recovery and his explanation of his visit to heaven. He becomes skeptical of God's actions once his son is laid up on the operating table for a ruptured appendix. Greg Kinnear does a fantastic job as Todd Burpo, a jack-of-all-trades that pastors a church, repairs things and fights fires. Instead, the movie makers chose to deviate from stressing the vision, and decided rather to show the day-to-day life of the Burpo family and how they balanced church, work and bills with their son's experience. The unraveling of this majestic vision is documented in the film, but it doesn't seem to be the main focus. Heaven is for Real tells the story of the small town Nebraskan Burpo family whose 4-year-old son Colton has a near-death experience where he visits heaven and meets Jesus. He returns with a voice in his head only he can hear, with a mission only he can complete: Build a treehouse in the woods by Christmas, or his mother and everyone in the town will never be the same again. Until Christopher emerges from the woods at the edge of town, unharmed but not unchanged. Just one highway in, one highway out.Īt first, it seems like the perfect place to finally settle down. It's as far off the beaten track as they can get. Together, they find themselves drawn to the tight-knit community of Mill Grove, Pennsylvania. Determined to improve life for her and her son, Christopher, she flees an abusive relationship in the middle of the night with her child. We can swallow our fear or let our fear swallow us.
